Summary: A leader for All the Ages
Comment: Lincoln is probably the most significant figure in American History not because of his political acumen though it is legend and not because he was a great general though he led us through our greatest historical trial - the Civil War. His greatness lies in the fact that he was big enough to see the American experiment for what is was - an experiment for the whole world and small enough to be able to communicate complex thought in language the average man could understand. Through these characteristics he engendered trust and admiration and yes - even loyalty not only from his supporters from his skeptics and enemies as well. If we are limited to a word to describe this historical giant it must be - Magnanimity. He was truly a leader for all the ages.
Ms Goodwin weaves what could have been a dry recounting of the facts of history into an incredible page turning tapestry revealing the chemistry of the events and historical opportunities of the day as they were catalyzed by personalities of Lincoln and his cabinet, the Team of Rivals.
Whatever you think about Mr Obama, he is our President elect and this book has influenced his political trajectory. He has asked for the Lincoln Bible to be the Bible used when he takes the oath of office. To know his mind this is required reading.

Comment: This is definately a terrific book. Can't help but think of the Obama campaign linking his unlikely rise to Lincoln. Great book for presidential history and civil war buffs.

Summary: An incredible story
Comment: Even though this is an informative and serious biography, it's a real page turner. Goodwin engages the reader in this story of a pivotal period in our history and a group of unique and talented men. I could not put this book down!

Summary: team of rivals is flawed
Comment: The book looks at three rivals who sort of worked together in the end. The book fails to address Lincolns disasterous decisions with the rest of his cabinet and the generals he selected. The cost of the war in terms of money and humanity due to his inability to select a proper set of generals while trying to appease everyone made the war last about 3 years longer than it ever had to considering all the advantages the north had.
If Linconls philosophy was to have a team of rivals it nearly destroyed the nation. Here's hoping Obama actually rereads his history and doesn't take too much away from this book he claims to love without knowing....the rest of the story.

Summary: I love this book!!!
Comment: This is the best book ever. I read it before when I got it from the library, and it was one of those books that I just had to own. It made me fall in love with Lincoln. Doris Kearns Goodwin's writing is wonderful. Reading this book allowed me to get to know him, I had a visceral feeling about him. I highly recommend this book, it has become one of my 5 most loved reads.
...and it became relevant for me in today's time after it was made known that Obama had read the book, and was picking his cabinet based on some of Abraham Lincoln's values as laid out in this book. Loving this book as I did, I felt I knew something about Obama, if it moved him to bring something from Abraham Lincoln and his presidency into our time.
Thank you Doris Kearn Goodwin for this most amazing book. I hope everyone who reads this book loves it as much as I did.
