But while packing away their keepsakes in the attic, Arnold finds his father’s old journal. The journal chronicles his parents’ lives from the moment they first met deep in a South American Jungle to the day they disappeared. Over snacks with Grandma and Grandpa, Arnold learns of the story of his birth amidst an erupting volcano, mom and dad’s harrowing aventures as new parents, their return to America, and the day they embarked on their last trip to the jungle. Throught the pages of the journal, Arnold experiences his parents for the first time and finally feels a sense of closure. But there’s still one surprise left. As Arnold examines the last two pages in the book, he discovers a map of the location where his parents were headed.

You know you’re going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics’ longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that’s Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quit hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there’s always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. If Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents the lighter side of high school as a macabre experience, here’s a movie that asks the burning question, “What happens when angst-ridden teenagers develop supernatural powers?” More to the point, how do four outcast teenaged witches handle their ability to cast wicked spells on the taunting classmates who’ve nicknamed them “The Bitches of Eastwick”? The answer, of course, is “don’t get mad, get even.” That’s about all there is to this terminally silly movie, which makes up for its ludicrous plot by letting its young female cast have a field day as they indulge their dark fantasies.
